چکیده

The upcoming standard for wireless LANs DFWMAC1 developed by the IEEE2 802.11 working group consists of two parts the distributed coordination function DCF that is based on a contention scheme and the point coordination function PCF based on a contention free scheme. The DCF is CSMA/CA like access protocol with several extensions. In this paper, following a short presentation of the elements in DFWMAC in general and DCF in particular we will present the results of our simulative analysis of the DCF part in DFWMAC focussing on two key mechanisms in it the RTS/CTS message exchange and the backoff algorithm.

Analyzing the RTS/CTS Mechanism in the DFWMAC Media Access Protocol for Wireless LANs

The distributed coordination function that is used as the access scheme for asynchronous traffic within the upcoming standard for wireless LANs IEEE 802.11 optionally applies the RTS/CTS message exchange to solve the ‘hidden terminal’ scenario. In this paper, following a general discussion of the mechanism and its problems, we show the effectiveness or lack thereof of this mechanism in various ...

Analyzing and Improving the IEEE 802.11-MAC Protocol for Wireless LANs

Wireless LANs Jost Weinmiller, Hagen Woesner, Adam Wolisz Electrical Engineering Department Technical University Berlin, Sekr. FT5 Einsteinufer 25, 10587 Berlin, Germany Abstract 1The MAC-part of the upcoming IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless LANs named DFWMAC 2 is based on a CSMA/CA-type access protocol with a rotating backo window and an optional RTS/CTS message exchange. In this paper, follo...

Performance Analysis of Interconnections of Ieee 802.11 Networks with Other Networks

Wireless LANs coming into existence about 10 years ago and up to this time the number of total wireless devices grows up to 1 million. IEEE 802.11 is the new wireless networks standard that was finished and standardized in 1997. The physical layer and MAC described in standard allow us to achieve wireless connectivity between moving, portables and fixed stations within a certain area called BSA...

Dynamic tuning of the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function to derive a theoretical throughput limit

IEEE 802.11 is the most popular and widely used standard for wireless local area network communication. It has attracted countless numbers of studies devoted to improving the performance of the standard in many ways. In this article, we performed theoretical analyses for providing a solution to the maximum throughput problem for the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function, and an algorith...

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
